On Sunday November 8, 2015 at approximately 10:00 am, Earnest Cheatham a friend of Edna Lafayette who is the estranged wife of Douglas Lafayette were traveling south on State Highway 195 near Fulton in his 2011 Chevrolet pickup, when he met Douglas Lafayette who was driving a maroon Chevrolet pick-up traveling north.

 

After passing Cheatham, Lafayette turned around and entered into the passing lane and attempted to strike Cheatham’s vehicle in an abrupt manner. Lafayette passed Cheatham and stopped his vehicle just ahead of Cheatham.

 

Lafayette then exited the vehicle with a 12 gauge shotgun, pointed it in Cheatham’s direction and fired several shotgun round into the windshield of Cheatham’s truck. Cheatham attempted to leave. Lafayette got back into his vehicle drove past Cheatham, Lafayette stopped his vehicle just ahead of Cheatham and fired several more shots from the shotgun into Cheatham’s vehicle. When Cheatham attempted to turn his vehicle around, Lafayette shot through the driver’s side window causing Cheatham to collide into a fence. After Colliding with the fence Lafayette fled the scene.

 

At the time of the call Hempstead County Deputies were dealing with a Suicide attempt so Arkansas State Police Trooper Darren Henley and Trooper Dale Young responded and took Lafayette into custody without incident.

 

Lafayette was transported to the Hempstead County Detention Center where he was booked for Attempted Capital Murder and Aggravated Assault. Lafayette’s bond was set at $100,000.00.

 

The two victims Cheatham and Edna Lafayette sustained only minor injuries.
